Sarah Teather MP with Charles Kennedy

On Thursday 18th September the Liberal Democrats inflicted the first by-election defeat on Labour in fifteen years.

In response to this result Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy said: "The tide is turning against Tony Blair and New Labour. Our win in Brent East shows that the Lib Dems are set for many more gains in the future. We are on the way up!"

The result was also a disaster for the Conservatives who were pushed into third place.
