Lib Dems Call for Recycling of Batteries12.37.48am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 23rd May 2004
Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament have voted to support plans for household batteries to be recycled.
The plans would set a target for 50% of all household batteries to be recycled. Local campaigner Jamie Johnson said "This scheme would see the introduction of boxes for recycling batteries, like those for paper. The batteries would be recycled rather than buried in landfill, where their acid leaks into the ground. Portable batteries cause significant damage to the environment, and recycling them instead will reduce their impact."
