Make Povery History campaign hits home9.24.22pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 28th Apr 2005
Laura Murphy, Parliamentary Candidate for Tunbridge Wells visited Bennett Memorial School last week. Addressing the 6th form, Laura answered questions put by the students. High on the agenda for the students was the campaign against world poverty and the environment. "I was able to reassure them that the Liberal Democrats were fully behind the world poverty campaign and would have 100% debt relief for the poorest countries. We want to reduce the trade barriers that penalise developing countries and prevent developed countries from dumping their produce on poorer countries. We want reform of the World Bank, the IMF, the World Trade Organisation and the EU who are all responsible for loans. Importantly we want a better representation and participation by the developing countries in these organisations and support in assisting them to cope with emerging markets." The Liberal Democrats have the environment at the heart of everything they do and this includes making sure that aid and assistance to developing countries supports sustainable development. The Make Poverty History campaign has generated a large postbag for Laura. "It is obviously of major concern to the residents in Tunbridge Wells," she said.
