Retail in our town centre is in decline. Shops lie empty, with expensive business rates discouraging new and local businesses from starting up.
We believe Tunbridge Wells has the potential to offer a great retail experience, strong enough to encourage shoppers out of London. But this will require vision, and schemes to give local retailers (who reinvest more in the local economy) a level playing field.
We call on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council to introduce a 'Shop Local' scheme to:
- Encourage spend with local businesses (who reinvest more in the local economy than nationwide firms)
- Offer residents reductions with local firms
- Help to support start-ups and new business ventures
